Betty Smith Obituary

A Funeral Service for Betty Smith, age 91, of Spirit Lake will be held on Friday, November 4, 2022 at 10:30am at Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Spirit Lake. The family invites friends to join them for a luncheon immediately following the service at the Senior Center in Spirit Lake. Burial will be on Friday, November 4, 2022 at 1:30pm at the Dickens Cemetery in Dickens.

Visitation will take place on Thursday, November 3, 2022 from 5:00-7:00pm at the funeral home in Spirit Lake.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Betty's family at 6218 120th Avenue, Storm Lake, Iowa 50588.

Betty Jean Smith, the daughter of John and Menelva (Weist) Biery, was born on January 5, 1931, in De Smet, South Dakota. Growing up, Betty attended school in De Smet and Primghar, Iowa.

On January 11, 1949, Betty was united in marriage to Roy Smith in Spencer, Iowa. The couples' first home was in Terril. From Terril they moved to Arnolds Park and eventually Spirit Lake.

During her working life, Betty had her own in-home day care. Betty loved caring for and spending time with the children.

Betty was a member of the New Testament Baptist Church in Spirit Lake. In her free time, she enjoyed reading, baking, flowers, and refinishing furniture.

Betty passed away on October 31, 2022, at Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Dave (Marla) Smith of Storm Lake, Iowa and Doug Smith of Washington, Iowa; grandchildren: Travis (Sarah) Smith of Ames, Iowa; Kelly (Billy) Knightlinger of Farmington, Minnesota; Nick (Kate) Smith of Iowa City, Iowa; Justin Smith of Columbus Junction, Iowa; Carrie Smith of Spencer, Iowa; Rose Smith of Washington, Iowa; Matthew Smith of Washington, Iowa; step-grandchildren, Amber (Ben) Anderson and April DeMuth of Milford, Iowa; 12 ½ (one on the way) great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Elaine Biery of Paullina, Iowa; extended family and friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Smith; brothers: Donald Biery of Paullina, Iowa; Ronald Biery of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Gerald (Mike) Biery of Collins, Iowa; sister, JoAnn Cleghorn of Winterset, Iowa; stepbrother, Carl Peterson of Primghar, Iowa; infant son, Charles; and parents, John and Menelva Biery of Primghar, Iowa.
