He was predeceased by: his parents, Woodrow Cantrell and Irene Cantrell; his son James Roy Cantrell Jr.; his granddaughter Amanda Swope; his brother Racine Cantrell; and his daughter Jessica Dreist.

He is survived by: his wife Wanda Cantrell (Thacker); and his daughter Kimberly Swope (Victor). He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
