He was predeceased by : his wife Constance Louise Somer (Sawyer); and his son John Joseph Somer. He is survived by : his daughters, Anne Somer Nelson and Joan Somer Sharp; and his grandchildren, Ross Nelson, Shea Nelson, Hannora "Nonie" Sharp and Annie Sharp.
John spent much of his professional life at Emporia State University, where he became a Professor Emeritus, recognized for his contributions to the field of English and literature.
