He was predeceased by: his parents, Elmer "Bus" Smith and Isabelle. He is survived by: his wife Kari; his children, Ben Smith and Lena Smith; his siblings, David Smith, Sharon Peterson and Nancy Delware; and his stepsiblings, June Stripp, Lorraine Zarnstorff and Trish Cerice. He is also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Big Shoulders Fund of Chicago are greatly appreciated.
