He was predeceased by: his parents, Emerson Altensey and Arlene Altensey (Laible); and his son Andy. He is survived by: his former wife Bette Blankenhorn; his wife Bette Altensey of Freeport; his children, Perry Altensey (Sue) of Freeport, Robin Moore (Beau) of Brookfield, WI., Barbara Baron (Keith) of Woodridge, IL. and Barri Maaske (Eric) of Glen Ellyn, IL.; his grandchildren, Gary Altensey (Andrea), Amy Levan (Derek), Emma, Isaac Maaske, Jacob and Rosie Baron; and his great grandchildren, Derek Jr., Liam, Lexi Levan, Jaxen and Ellie Altensey.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for Friends Forever Humane Society.
