She was predeceased by : her parent Mary Ann Merchant (Younkee); and her stepfather Jim Merchant. She is survived by : her husband George Carlson Jr.; her children, Cheri Denniston (Mike), George Carlson III (Anneliese), Mary Ellen Rice (Richard) and Jerry Carlson; her grandchildren, Brady Denniston (Rhonda), Justin Denniston (Ryann), George Carlson IV, Malarie Carlson, Steffen Carlson, Rylie Carlson, George Carlson V, Shannon Rice, Whitney Rice, Jordan Carlson and Annabel Carlson; and her great grandchildren, Karsten, Wyatt, Izabella and Maddelyn.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the National Breast Cancer Foundation in Mary Ellen's name.
