He was predeceased by: his parents, Dempsey D. Smith Sr. and Ruby Smith (Staake); and his brothers, Anthony Smith and William Smith. He is survived by: his wife Yan Ru Smith; his siblings, Robert Smith (Lee) of Trenton, Michael B. Smith Sr. of Bushnell and Jane Adams (Michael) of Kingman; his half-siblings, Terry Smith of Palestine, Jerry Smith of Stronghurst, Illinois and Sandra DeWitt (Rich) of Pennsylvania; and his aunt Betty Smith. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
