He was predeceased by: his parents, Victor Carl and Bernice Toland Nelson; his children, Jodi and Spencer; and his brother Robert Nelson.
He is survived by: his spouse Verona Mills Walter; his children, Richard Paul Nelson (Kathy) of Augusta, John Edward Nelson of Macomb, IL and Terri Anne Brownfield (Tom) of Havana, IL.; and his stepchildren, Charles William Walter (Karen) of Arlington, TX, Patricia Carpenter (Jan), Doris, Roberts and Marti J. Walter of Macomb, IL.. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 3 step-granddaughters.
