He was predeceased by: his parents, Carl Otto and Maren Kristine Mortensen (Ditlefsen); his adoptive parents, Rasmus Karstensen and Anna Karstensen; and his siblings, Agnes, Carl, Allan and Victor.

He is survived by: his wife Patricia Atherton; his children, Ann Karstensen (Tony Schritz) and Robert M. Karstensen Jr.; his grandsons, Adam, Alex and Nathan Karstensen; Anna (Rasmus Karstensen). He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
