He was predeceased by: his parents, William Scott and Maggie Scott; and his siblings, Rosie Babbs, Mary Frances Wilson, Sylvia, Mary Alice Striverson, Catherine Easterly, Emmett Jr., William Jimmy, L. C. James Scott, Joe Frank and Major Surry.

He is survived by: his son Keitron Coates; his sisters, Hester Powell, Lena B. Span, Amaris Tatum and Willie Jean Lapsley; and his stepsister Lisa Fields of Fort Wayne. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
