He was predeceased by: his parents, Elmer Gates and Hazel Thompson Gates; and his siblings, Eleanor Mae and Elmer C. Gates. He is survived by: his wife Joycelyn Gates of Lafayette; his children, Randall Gates (Rosa), Jere Gates (Sara) and Sandra Lohman; his siblings, Tom Gates (Marge) and Mary Chalko; his sister-in-law Karen Hartke (Gene); his grandchildren, Joshua Gates, Aaron Gates, Candice Lohman, Kyle Lohman and Andrew Lohman; and his great grandchildren, Stella and Aeden.
Due to the Covid-19 situation, a celebration of life service will be held this summer.
