He is survived by : his wife Hedi; his children, Uwe (Christiane), Elke (Eric) and Kai; and his grandchildren, Anke, Aaron, Benjamin, Truman and Anneliese.

“I just learned of Winfried's passing today in an email from GSU. Winfried was a force of nature to be reckoned with!! We met on the University Personnel Committee and immediately connected. A child secunded into Hitler's youth and the Luftwaffe, he recognized and fought against the misuse/abuse of power. He was the epitome of a positive curmudgeon. He never let up and could always be counted on to support individuals and to distrust and speak out against abusive leadership. He was a hero!!”
