He was predeceased by: his parents, James Whitten and Authelia Whitten (Slinker); his grandson Jeff Johnson; and his siblings, Dorothy Mae, June and Jimmy.

He is survived by: his wife Dorothy Jane Whitten (Hollen); his children, Janie Estes (John), Becky Johnson (Gary), Cathy Cogswell (Tom) and Tim Whitten; and his daughter-in-law Mari Beth Whitten. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren.
