He was predeceased by : his parents, Vernie Powell and Loretta Powell (Needham); his grandmother Lee Powell (Payne); his grandchildren, Cassandra Powell, Miranda Anglea and Dylan Anglea; his grandmother Lee Lawrence; and his siblings, Robert Powell, Marilyn Ledger, Danny Powell and Ronnie Powell.

He is survived by : his daughter Melody Hess (Steven, Jr.); his stepchildren, William Baker (Pam) of Shirley and Robin Lawrence (Larry II) of Pleasantville, IN; his grandchildren, Kristan Dowden, Steven Hess III, Cody Anglea, Ryan Anglea, Jeffrey Shepherd (Patsy), Chelsea Edens, Jessica Stiffler (Matthew), William "Bubby" Baker, Kalen Baker, Kassidy Baker, Kari Lawrence, Veronica Spinnie (Ryan), Larry Lawrence III, Aiden Jent, Jesse Jent and Cody Jent; and his siblings, Cecil Powell (Kathy), David Powell (Kelli), Phillip Powell (Rae-Ann) and Rita Goode. He is also survived by 22 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
