He was loved and cherished by many people including : his parents, James Gates and Mary Gates (Holland); his wife Diana Gates; his sister Linda Schiltz; his nephew David Cook Rob (Wendy); and his niece Leanne Peel (Joe). He was also cherished by six great nieces and nephews; four great great nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial donations in his name to the Tonganoxie Terrace (Tonganoxie Nursing Home) For something for the residents in Honor of Gary.
