He was predeceased by : his parents, Allan Yates and Jean Davis Yates; his wife Nancy Carter Yates; and his brothers, James "Ike" Yates, Fred Yates, Kenneth Yates, Larry Paul Yates and Charles Yates.

He is survived by : his son Denis Yates (Cindy) of Auburn, KY.; his siblings, William Yates of Auburn, KY, Clarence Yates (Pam) of Russellville, KY, John Yates of Russellville, KY, Stoney Yates (Lee Ann) of Russellville, KY., Brenda Nations (Alan) of Russellville, KY, Teresa Dodson (Sam) of Russellville, KY and Lisa Atkinson (Steve) of Russellville, KY.; and his grandchildren, Joshua Yates (Neisha) and Kristi Harper (Travis).
