He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, David Oliver and Mary Leila Murphy (Sapp); his wife Charlotte Ellen Davis; his children, Joseph Gregory Murphy, Jr. (Melissa) of Colorado, Rebecca Jo Smith (Timothy) of Louisville and David Evans Murphy (Allen) of Louisville; his siblings, Gary Murphy, Chris Murphy (Debbie), Pat Murphy (Betty), Dianne Kelly (Steve), Timothy Murphy (Debra), Terry Murphy (Cherry), Monica Price (Bobby) and Donna Perkins (Johnnie); his grandchildren, Joseph Gregory Murphy, III (Samantha), Wesley Graham Murphy (Auriel) and Brianna Joellen Smith; and his great grandchildren, Joseph Gregory Murphy, IV, Nevaeh Murphy and Ryker Murphy.
