He is survived by: his spouse Lynn Sandefur Shepherd; his children, Malinda Asbury Shepherd of Georgetown, KY and James "Josh" Shepherd, III (Pam Shepherd); his grandson John Shepherd Presson (Emily Presson); and his brother Jack W.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kentucky United Methodist Church or Georgetown College.
