He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Joe Schmidt and Olga Schmidt; his wife Dorothy Shelley Schmidt; his stepdaughter Susan; his children, Larry, Mike and Joanna; his grandchild Joey; his great grandchildren, Danny, Sammy and Donald; and his brother Billy. He was also cherished by eleven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Joe was known to volunteer in the community and was awarded numerous commendations with the Central Kentucky Blood Bank for his numerous blood donations.
