He was predeceased by : his son Martin Mathews; and his siblings, Lottie Newsome, Harry L., Oscar, Otis, William Mathews, Jr., Annie B. Spann and Willie Mae Robinson.

He is survived by : his children, Trela Mathews, Damon Miles (Angel), Karen Mathews, Angela Mathews-King, Felicia Mathews (Gary Burks), Cheryl Mathews-Lacey (Adolphus) and Robert E. Wright; and his sisters, June Mathew Montgomery, Barbara Link and Pearline Caviness. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and friends.
