He was predeceased by: his parents, Irene Schmelz and Mark Schmelz; his mother-in-law Louise Dever; his siblings, Tony Schmelz, Martha Gibson and Velma Salesman; and his brothers-in-law, Bobby Dever, Denny Dever, Johnny Dever, Ed Jones and Mike Baxter (Rosie).

He is survived by: his wife Sherri Schmelz; his pet Bogey; his daughter Katie Phillips (Russell Lynch); his grandson Duane "Thunder" Phillips, IV; his siblings, Paul Schmelz (Peggy), Thelma Welsbacher (Karl), Brenda Baxter (Norbert), Bonnie Krider (Rick) and Suzy Visser (Marcel); and his siblings-in-law, Brenda Miller (Mike), Patti Jones, Joe Dever (Susan), Neil Dever (Anne), Nancy Duncan (Dean) and Carolyn Stack (Jerry). He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, great – nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.
