He was predeceased by: his parents, Benny Hemphill and Margaret Hemphill; and his sisters, Gerry, Glenda and Barbara.

He is survived by: his wife Mary Ruth Hemphill; and his children, Ginger Smith, Sissy McKinnie, Lindy Watson (Johnny) and Hemphill, Jr. (Cathy). He is also survived by ten grandchildren, twenty eight great-grandchildren, and a host of extended family and friends.
