It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Vernita Johnson Gaines of Gretna, Louisiana, born in Vacherie, Louisiana, who passed away on March 13, 2023, at the age of 82, leaving to mourn family and friends. She was predeceased by: her husband Lawrence Gaines, Sr.; her son Tyrone; her stepchild Beverly Dunn; her grandchild Kendri Phillips; and her brother-in-law Clarence Paul.
She is survived by: her children, Steven Johnson (Marilyn), Carolyn Geary, Lynette Johnson, Lawrence Gaines, Jr. (Malinda), Eric Gaines (Barbara) and Marilyn Brignac; her grandson Eric Johnson; her siblings, Elizabeth Paul, Rebecca Green of California, Stephanie Mouton of Georgia and Freddie Young (Pat) of South Carolina; her cousin Tammy Brown; and her close friend Josephine Hartman. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren 4 great great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
