He was predeceased by : his spouse Thecla Leonita Tjien A Fat; and his parents, Josephine Chehin and Badia Mekdessie. He is survived by : his half-sister Agnes Van Rijn; his children, Rick Mekdessie (Carmen), Lilian "Cha-Cha" Scott (Ernesto), Carlton Mekdessie, Ryan Mekdessie (Rachel) and Tanya Stuart (Stan); his niece Astrid Cheng A June (Marlone); and his grandchildren, Blake, Justin, Christine, Ashley Mekdessie, Anthony, Nicholas, Benjamin Stuart, Elena Stukenborg (Sam), Thecla Scott, Dario Scott (Rachel) and Adam Scott (Liz).
