He was predeceased by: his parents, Willie Dell Nelson and Mary Samantha Corley Nelson; and his grandchildren, Rickey "Bubba" Nelson and Hannah Grace Nelson. He is survived by: his wife Norma Jean Cater Nelson of Vidalia, LA; his children, William Nelson, Jr. (Stacy) of Waterproof, LA, Curtis Glen Nelson (Missy) of Ferriday, LA and Glenda Scott (Tyler) of Meadville, MS; his grandchildren, Tabitha, Miracle, Jon Christian Nelson, Haley Craft (Cade), Michael Nelson (Rachel), RJ, Gracie Nelson, Jordan McLemore (Brandon), Regan Scott, Morgan Stephens (Duel) and Lauran Scott; and his great grandchildren, Ella Grace, Ren, Dakoda, Caden, Parker, Bailen, Mathis, Nathan and Sarah.
