He was predeceased by: his parent Kenneth L. Bates; and his sibling Kenneth L. Bates Jr.. He is survived by: his wife Carolyn Bates (Wentworth); his daughter Julie Halaby (Jon); his grandchildren, Brooke and Benjamin of Cohasset; his sister-in-law June Jenkins of Kingston; his nephews, Kenneth L. Bates III of Whitman and Thomas Bates of Taunton; and his parent Helen Bates (Doherty).
