She was predeceased by: her parents, Myles F. Heffernan and Gertrude Heffernan (Bierweiler); her husband Curtis H. Smith, Sr.; her brother Myles F. Heffernan, Jr.; and her niece Marcia Billings (Heffernan).

She is survived by: her children, Michael S. Smith (Shirley E.), Mary-Alice Mullin (Thomas) of Acton and Curtis H. Smith, Jr. (Kimberly Morse) of Gilford, NH; her grandchildren, Jason M. Smith, Kristen E Callahan and Hollis A. Smith; her great grandchildren, Ryan M. Smith and Andrew J. Callahan; and her sibling's children, Myles F. Heffernan (Janet) of Bellows Falls, VT and Patricia Swain (George Ayres) of Whitehall, MD..

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Joanne's name to the Alzheimer's Foundation.
