He was predeceased by: his parents, Edward R. Sands and Evelyn M. Sands (Monahan); and his brother Steven Sands. He is survived by: his son Michael Sands of Wakefield; his siblings, Robert Sands (Cheryl) of Tyngsboro, Barbara Moccio of Dorchester, Linda Downey (Gerard) of Quincy and Joseph Sands of Quincy; and his siblings' children, Eric (Tiffany Sands), Dawn (Billy Lipp), Anthony, Erica (Shaina Moccio), Kyle (Kelsey Downey) and Joe (Julia Sands).
