Lee Thomas Doherty Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lee Thomas Doherty on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at The Kaplan House, with his family by his side. Born on October 26, 1953, he was the beloved son of the late Francis (Frank) X. Doherty and Marion (Conserva) Doherty. Lee grew up in Tewksbury and Newton Highlands, where he shared a lively home with his parents and four siblings. A master of his craft, Lee was an expert piano craftsman who began rebuilding Steinway grand pianos at a young age while working alongside his father.
He later purchased Acme Piano Sales, where he perfected his skills and became renowned for his artistry. Lee rebuilt pianos from the inside out—restringing, repairing soundboards, restoring keys, and refinishing cases with meticulous care. Known for his extraordinary ear, he could tune an instrument to perfection, and, when he ran his fingers across the keys to test his work, it often sounded like a concerto. Over the years, Lee earned a sterling reputation, rebuilding and maintaining pianos for world-renowned figures including David Mamet, Elton John, and Joan Kennedy.
His craftsmanship also enriched countless schools, churches, private homes, and institutions throughout the Boston area. Lee's love of music was boundless, and he shared that passion with his children. He was a devoted concertgoer, often bringing along his camera to capture unforgettable moments. His photographs—particularly of the Rolling Stones—reflected the same artistry and precision he brought to his piano work, and those who saw them recognized their professional quality and authenticity. Lee was also very proud of the music program he initiated at CorePeer Recovery Center, where he encouraged others to find joy, healing, and connection through music.
The program was well attended and deeply appreciated by all who participated. Lee was predeceased by his brother, Paul Doherty (Patti) of California. He is survived by his children, Jesse (Kayla) Doherty, Lindsey (Matt) Andrewes, and Jarrett (Nicole) Doherty; and by his six cherished grandchildren: Olivia, Jack, Graham, Luke, Emmy, and Juliet. He is also survived by his first wife and friend, Meryl Sheriden; his sister Dawn Schlott (Jay) of Arizona; his sister Lisa Hedlund (Shane) of North Carolina; his brother Dan Doherty (Babs) of Virginia; and his second wife, Mona Dooley of Virginia.
Lee will be deeply missed by all of his family, including his many nieces and nephews. Through his love of music, Lee enriched the lives of his family and friends, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire. Interment will be private. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 30, 2025, from 3:00–6:00 PM at Castle Manor Inn, 141 Essex Avenue, Gloucester, MA. The family requests no small children due to limited space at the venue. Memorial donations may be made in Lee's memory to Core Peer Recovery and Resource Center, 11-15 Parker Street, Gloucester, MA.
