Maria Noto Obituary
Maria "Enza" (Adelfio) Noto, of Gloucester, beloved mother, grandmother and friend to so many, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2025, at the age of 73, after a brief courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family, who will forever cherish the warmth, strength, and love she brought into their lives.
Born on December 5, 1951, in Terrasini, Sicily, Maria immigrated to the United States in 1966 at the age of 14. She made Gloucester her home, becoming a cherished member of the community and the heart and soul of her family.
Maria was predeceased by her beloved husband of 47 years, Pietro Noto, her devoted partner and true love. Their love story began with a romantic proposal in Gloucester's Fort Square, a place that remained deeply special to them. A memorial bench now overlooks the ocean in their honor, symbolizing their enduring love and Pietro's long fishing career. Their marriage was a testament to faith, devotion, and an unbreakable bond built on love and family.
Maria was the proud and devoted mother of three daughters: Virginia Noto of Gloucester (partner Sal Eurici), Anna Ciaramitaro of Macomb, Michigan (husband Antonino), and Silvana Figueira of Beverly (husband John). She was a loving grandmother to Kristina Koulouris, Caterina, Giuseppe and Pietro Ciaramitaro, and Ariana and Joshua Figueira.
She was the cherished daughter of the late Stefano and Anna (Grillo) Adelfio, sister to Caterina Mannino (late husband Vincenzo) of Terrasini, Sicily; Bianca Salerno (late husband Giacomo) of Gloucester; Elizabeth Passalacqua (husband Valerio) of Gloucester; and Vincent Adelfio (wife Heather) of Gloucester.
Maria leaves behind numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family across Gloucester, Sicily, Canada, Michigan, Florida, and beyond, all of whom held a special place in her heart.
Maria worked for over 30 years at Gorton's as a fish packer and previously at Mighty-Mac. Her strong work ethic and dedication were admired by all who worked alongside her.
Deeply rooted in her Sicilian heritage, Maria was known for her extraordinary culinary talents. Her traditional meals and pastries became the centerpiece of every family gathering. She took great pride in her beautiful yard, lovingly tending to her flowers and vegetable garden. She found joy in shopping, playing cards, watching General Hospital, traveling to visit family, and attending the St. Joseph's and St. Anthony's novenas.
Her faith was unwavering. A proud Roman Catholic and devoted member of the Mother of Grace Club, Maria's spirituality guided every aspect of her life. She especially cherished being present for her grandchildren's special moments and milestones, always offering boundless love, pride, and support.
Maria's legacy is one of unconditional love, generosity, and strength. Her radiant smile, unique accent, compassionate heart, and vibrant spirit left a lasting impression on everyone she met. Known for her warmth and hospitality, "Enza" welcomed all with open arms, always ready to share a meal, a story, or a laugh.
Her loyal dog, Rocky, will forever miss his beloved mama, whose love and comfort filled her days. She will also be deeply missed by her dear friend, Marianne Giambanco Paquette, whose friendship and devotion meant so much to Maria.
Maria's family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Kaplan Hospice House, Addison Gilbert Hospital, the Oncology Department, and to her aide from Guardian Angels, Crystal Brown. Their dedication, kindness, and professionalism brought comfort and dignity during an incredibly difficult time. The family is deeply grateful for the compassionate care and support given to Maria in her final days.
