Mary L. Nunes Obituary
After a valiant battle with cancer, Mary L. Nunes (Gallo), 77 of Gloucester, MA passed away on Friday, November 18, 2022, surrounded by her loving daughter and the expert nursing and care staff at Seacoast Nursing Home, Gloucester, MA.
Mary was born into a hard-working fishing family and raised in Gloucester with all the traditions, including St. Peter's Fiesta and the Feast of the Seven Fishes. After graduating GHS, Mary went on to beauty school and began her hairdressing career at the House of Robel. She later married and moved to Essex opening the Village Beauty Shoppe which she owned and operated for over 20 years. After retiring from hairdressing, Mary went on to work many part-time jobs which she truly enjoyed. Some jobs included breakfast cook at Farnham's & Cameron's, Farmer Dan's Farm Stand and later she went on to a full-time job at Strong Leather. Of all things, Mary loved sewing the best, if you knew her, you probably own something she made for you, curtains, a blanket, a Raggedy Ann doll, or a quilt. She never missed a Red Sox game and got to see her favorite crooner, Johnny Mathis, several times in concert, and, if you knew her, she probably cooked for you. Her family still talks about her delicious meatballs, and once or twice she may have cut your hair, free of charge. As a hobby, she enjoyed making hand stitched dolls for donation around the world with her friends at the Rose Baker Senior Center. Her hand crafting talent, her sweet smile, sassy-straight-forward nature, and kind heart will be truly missed.
She is survived by her companion, Gene Nunes of Ipswich; her daughter, Gwendolyn (Wendy) Nunes of Essex and her partner Frank Militello of Gloucester; brother, Anthony Gallo Jr. of Gloucester; sister, Virginia (Ginny) Mason and her husband Kenneth of Londonderry, NH; sister-in-law, Joanne Gallo of Gloucester; her three stepchildren, Marcia Puliafico of Arizona, Kevin Nunes of Manchester, and Herbert Nunes of Essex, as well as many special nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her parents, Anthony Gallo Sr. and Lawrenzia Gallo (Favazza) and her brother, Salvatore (Sam) Gallo.
Mary's family would like to give special thanks to Lindsay Halverson, NP and all the staff at Thompson Medical Associates, the nurses and care staff at Seacoast Nursing Home (especially Sophia & Cassy) and all the people who assisted from Care Dimensions, your devotion and dedication to helping Mary and her daughter navigate through the rough waters of the last few months is amazing and will not be ever forgotten, thank you.
