Stephen B. Whitney Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Stephen Blake Whitney on Sunday July 13, 2025, at his home, with his wife and family by his side. Born on February 7, 1960, he was the son of Leslie Parkhurst, stepfather Hugh Parkhurst, and the late Russell "Kim" Whitney.

During his all too short fight with cancer, Steve was humbled by the many visits he received from new and old friends.

Steve was an intelligent and exuberant soul. He passionately pursued many diverse, interests in life. In his youth, he was involved in multiple sports. A graduate of Moses Brown School in RI, he was an all-star in hockey, football, and lacrosse. Later, he coached high school lacrosse, where his enthusiasm and emphasis on teamwork had made many of the team members become life-long friends.

For a brief time Steve worked at the family's video rental store. People still remember him and his colorful parrot "Nicky", who would say "pick it up" when anything dropped on the floor.

Steve was a well-known and talented fisherman. The ocean was "his office". Steve was a long time first mate on charter fishing trips aboard The Hard Merchandise, of Wicked Tuna fame. His passion and exuberance at sea, made his charter fishing trips a fun filled, unforgettable experience. He also loved going bass fishing, aboard his own boat with his good friend Joe Saracina.

Steve was a beloved member of Gloucester's recovery community. He made sure newcomers were greeted, and made to feel at home. He had an insatiable desire for others to find success. His message was heartfelt, inspiring, hopeful, and contagious.

Steve waited a long time for love. In 2020 at the age 60, he married Sally Reagan. They were each others "dive buddy" in life, sharing a close trusting relationship. Their's was a bond of mutual support, and a deep appreciation of each other. They restored a home, and created a life together they both cherished and enjoyed. Steve and Sally were loyal, and fully devoted to each other. Above everything, they wanted for the other's happiness.

Steve will be sorely missed by everyone he had ever encountered, growing up, playing sports, fishing, recovering, family, and friends. He will remain in our hearts forever. Rest in peace, Dear One.

Steve is survived by his wife Sally, his mother Leslie, a stepsister Alison, stepbrother Hugh Parkhurst, Uncle David W. Brown, Aunt Lindsay Pierce (Brad). Cousins Sean and Cody Burns, Randy Brown, Pamela and Howie Turnover, Hope Baker, Alison Swift, and Sandy Bigelow. Father-in-law Frank Reagan, Sister-in-law Maryjane O'Neill, and Brother-in-law Xavier Reagan.

He was predeceased by his father Kim Whitney, Stepfather Hugh Parkhurst, Aunt and Uncle Pam and Hop Swift, his Mother-in-Law Diane Reagan, grandparents Helen Porter and Myron Brown, and Harold and Francis Whitney.
