He was predeceased by: his spouse Laure-Marie Biebuyck (De Rycke); and his son Edwin Biebuyck. He is survived by: his children, Brunhilde Biebuyck, Annick Sawaya, Hans Biebuyck, Jean-Christophe Biebuyck, Jean-Marie Biebuyck and Beatrice Biebuyck; his grandchildren, Anouk Allart, Anthony, Laure-Marie Sawaya, Daniel, Aurelia Biebuyck, Emma Farsheed, Benjamin and Rebecca Biebuyck; and his brother Jan Biebuyck of Deinze, Belgium..
He was the recipient of numerous honors, grants, and fellowships, including the Rockefeller Foundation Humanities Fellowship, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
