He was predeceased by: his parents, Norman Gates and Constance Gates. He is survived by: his children, Richard A. Gates Jr. of Longmeadow, Kari Gates of Spring Hill, FL and Cherin Gates of Three Rivers; and his brother Douglas Gates (Judy) of Chicopee. He is also survived by four grandchildren.
