He was predeceased by: his parents, Patrick T. McDonnell and Anastasia McDonnell (Kane); and his siblings, Anne Stella (John), Thomas McDonnell (Phyllis), Theresa LeVangie (Bill), Mary Finch, Joseph McDonnell and Patrick McDonnell (PT).

He is survived by: his wife Sarah "Sally" McDonnell (Lynch); his children, Bernard McDonnell Jr. (Linh Thuy Nguyen), Mary Ann McDonnell (James Hardy) and Matthew McDonnell; his grandchildren, Christie Thomas-Moffett (Samantha), Jodi Maxwell (Phillip) and Derek Moffett; his great grandchildren, Oliver, Maxwell and Cillian; and his sister-in-law Nancy McDonnell. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
