He was predeceased by: his parents, Mark Dodge Sowles and Ethel Marsh Sowles; his wife Mary Sowles; and his sisters, Frances Butler and Ellen Cron.

He is survived by: his sons-in-law, Debby Pavinich, Wayne Pavinich, Erica Mumley and Tom Mumley; his grandchildren, Alaina Wingo, Greg Pavinich, Saranne Riccio and Laura Mumley; and his great grandchildren, Austin Davis of Knoxville, Olivia Davis of Knoxville, Ella Grace of Knoxville and Luke Pavinich of Knoxville.
