He was predeceased by: his parents, William Roy and Mary Chavis; and his brothers, Paul, Peter and James Arnold Chavis.
He is survived by: his siblings, Geneva Chavis, Tessie Booker, William R. Chavis Jr., Lorraine Meredith, Essaray Mullins, John Chavis and Mary Harryman; and his children, Robert William Chavis, Linda Wagaman and Mark Chavis. He is also survived by grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
