He was predeceased by: his wife Hilda Jean Diffenbaugh; and his sibling Laverne Diffenbaugh. He is survived by: his children, James L. Diffenbaugh, Jr. (Paula), Michael J. Diffenbaugh (Brenda) and Patricia J. Kankosky (Joseph); his siblings, Robert Diffenbaugh, Sr. (late Shirley), Harry Diffenbaugh (Kathy), Vincent J. Diffenbaugh (Boysie), Mary Dolores Naresky (Sissy) and Arthur J. Diffenbaugh (Otts); his sibling-in-law Jean Anne Diffenbaugh; his grandchildren, Julie Poleski, Jena Marie Czyzewski (David), Brandon Kankosky, Melissa, Travis Diffenbaugh, Briana, Jerrad Diffenbaugh, Anita, Tyler Diffenbaugh (Sammi), Dylan Kankosky, Gillian and Kyleigh Diffenbaugh; and his great grandchildren, Taylor, Jade, McKenzie, Autumn and Annaleia. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, other family and friends.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in James's name to St. Frances De Sale Catholic Church in Abingdon.
