He was predeceased by: his parents, William Hampton Thomas, Sr. and Bessie Naomi Thomas (Twilley); his wife Ruth F. Travers; his daughter Bonnie A. Long; and his siblings, Margaret N. Crannell (Peggy) and William Thomas Jr. (Bill).
He is survived by: his son David L. Thomas, Jr. (Janet) of Cabin Creek; his son-in-law Lewis Long; his grandchildren, Robin Lynn Olsen (Eric), David L. Thomas III (Jessica), Kristy C. Jones (Jason Trego), Caitlyn Thomas and Emily Thomas; and his great grandchildren, Hailey Hurt, Savannah Hurt and Jenna Trego. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
