He was predeceased by: his parents, Frederick McKinley Atherton and Ellen Levina Atherton (Holstay); and his wife Nancy Benchoff Atherton. He is survived by: his daughter Morgen Atherton of Frederick, MD; his stepchildren, Karin Ann Hansen (Jeff) of Whaleyville, MD and Christopher Michael Sasse (Melanie) of Frederick, MD; and his grandchildren, William Fitzgerald Sasse, Karl Christopher Sasse and Josephine Lee Sasse.
