She was predeceased by: her parents, Marjorie Thomas Hammond of Sumner and Oswald Kenric Hammond of Auburn; and her siblings, George Simms Hammond, Rosemund Hammond Morrill, Alice Hammond Humes and Kathryn Hammond Field.

She is survived by: her husband Frank Walter Underkuffler; her siblings, Oswyn Kenric Hammond of Medway and Esther Hammond Cooper of Sumner; her children, Frances Underkuffler Mochida (Shigeru Mochida), Laura Simms Underkuffler (David Nowlin) of Portland and Frank Metz Underkuffler (LuAnn Yetter) of Farmington; and her grandchildren, Nathaniel Underkuffler (Justina Huddleston) of Van Nuys, Calif., Wilson Underkuffler (Rebekah Cumpsty) of Ogden, Utah, Katharine Knight (Anthony Knight) of El Paso, Texas and Anna Freund of Northampton.

Memorials in lieu of flowers can be given to the Henderson Memorial Baptist Church in Joan's name.
