He was predeceased by: his parents, Wayne Mountz and Dorothy Mountz (Hertz); and his siblings, Kenneth Mountz of Detroit and Margaret Mountz of Flordia. He is survived by: his wife Joni Ely of Ahmeek; his children, Brent Sackett (Cheryl) of Arizona, Brandi Savela (Aaron) of Hancock, Chad Ely (Jennifer) of Calumet, Donald Nicely II (Jessica) of Calumet and Matthew Nicely of Marquette; his grandchildren, Tyler Carlson, Alyssa Carlson, Donald Nicely III, Samantha Coon, Jaden Ely, Dominick Nicely, Wyatt Sackett, Caleb Ely, Mattyx Nicely, Aaron Savela Jr. Haden Sackett, Tyler Smith and Rachel Smith; his great grandchild Evelyn Carlson; and his niece Kris Bulla (Colin) of North Carolina.
