He is survived by: his children, Beth Welker of Harbor Beach, Paul Schmalz of Valley View, OH, Michael Schmalz (Sharon) of Harbor Beach and Daniel Schmalz of Aiken; his grandchildren, Jennifer, Andrew Schmalz, Zachary, Gabriel Martinez, Jade and Leah Schmalz; his brothers, Thomas Schmalz (Judy) of Lake Orion and Fred Schmalz; his close friend Kim of Detroit; and his brother-in-law Mark Christenson (Ann) of Fort Gratiot. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
