JoAnn W. Callaghan Obituary
JoAnn Walton Callaghan, a beacon of love and selflessness, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2025, at the age of 96 in Sheffield Place. Born on July 22, 1928, in Baltimore, Maryland, JoAnn's life was a testament to the enduring power of faith and family.
JoAnn's journey began as the cherished daughter of her Baltimore-based family, and her path led her to the heart of Thomas Callaghan, whom she married on February 19, 1949, in Mackinaw City, Michigan. Their union was a beautiful example of lifelong commitment, as they celebrated 62 years of marriage until Thomas's passing in 2011. JoAnn's legacy flourishes through her loving children, Bob, David (Carol), Tom (Dawn), Bill (Diane), Steve (Carrie), Peg (Tim) Trepkowski, Ed (MaryJo), and John (Chris) Callaghan. She was the proud grandmother to 21 adored grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren who will carry her spirit forward. JoAnn's extended family circle includes her sister-in-law Dorothy Barnes, alongside many devoted nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter Barbara, and her siblings, Robert Barnes, Lawrence (Mary Ellen) Barnes, and her daughter-in-law Betty Callaghan.
JoAnn's thirst for knowledge and personal growth led her to the Northeastern School of Commerce, where she honed her secretarial skills with pride. Her professional journey was marked by a deep sense of community, as evidenced by her membership at St. Mary's of the Assumption Catholic Church and her active involvement with the VFW Post 6950.
JoAnn's commitment to service extended beyond her church and community affiliations. She dedicated countless hours volunteering at Bay Med Hospital, also known as McLaren, where her presence was a comfort to many. Her selflessness was matched only by her passion for life, which included reading, knitting, and traveling. Florida held a special place in her heart, where she enjoyed the warmth of the sun and the company of friends.
Above all, JoAnn's proudest achievement was raising her family. She instilled in her children's values of kindness, resilience, and integrity that have rippled through the generations. Her home was a sanctuary of love, where laughter and wisdom filled the rooms, and where every family member knew they were deeply cherished.
Family would like to thank staff at Sheffield Bay Assisted Living, Charter Senior Living, and American Homecare and Hospice for the loving care and support given to JoAnn.
In lieu of flowers those wishing an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the ARC of Bay County.
