He was predeceased by : his parents, Emil DeSmet and Irma DeSmet (Verkenderen); his wife Patricia Jean Gwynn; his son Edmund Edward DeSmet Jr.; and his siblings, Mary Felty, Joe and Albert DeSmet.

He is survived by : his children, JoAnne Marie Waldoff (Michael), Barbara Ann Ouillet (Richard), William James DeSmet (Sheri), Patrick Michael DeSmet and Tracy Stouten; and his brother Morris DeSmet. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren.
