He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Edward Smith and Derua Davenport Smith; his cousin Molly Schmidt; his wife Nancy P. Johnson; his stepchildren, Barb Arrigo, Tom Johnson, Chuck McCready and Beverly McCready; Nancy Bortel, Steve Schmidt, Frank Schmidt, Carolyn Hess, Marilyn Warren and Karen Schmidt.

During the pandemic, he was an active participant in Zoom meetings with both sets of families.
