He was predeceased by: his parents, Arthur W. Smith and Veona A. Smith (Oleson); his wife Jaris L. Kelly; his son Jim; and his brother-in-law Lowell.

He is survived by: his daughter-in-law Amanda Smith; his grandson Kai; his sister Marlys Handberg; his sister-in-law Mary Jo Kelly; his nieces, Heather (Tony) and Kathy; and his nephew John.
