He was predeceased by: his parents, John "Jack" and Ruby Butz (Arnold); his wife Margaret Kitto Butz; his brother Dennis Butz; his sons, Richard Joseph Butz, Jr. and Benjamin Dean Butz; and his foster son Ronnie Cosay.
He is survived by: his brother David (Sharon) of Chaska, MN; and his daughters, Donna Mae Wilks (Tony) of Woodbridge, VA and Barbara Jane Kitto of Bemidji. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
