He was predeceased by: his parents, Hattie Leonard (Thienes) and Benjamin Leonard; his siblings, Ben, Bernice and Maxine; and his son-in-law Jeffrey Quam.

He is survived by: his wife Marion "Bunny" Besmehn; his children, Gordon (Maia), Linda (Tommy), Vicki (Jerry), Cindy (Kevin) and Debbie; his friend Cindy Yeager; and his sister-in-law Martha. He is also survived by grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a great-great grandchild.
