He was predeceased by: his parents, Mary Peterson and Harry Peterson; his wife Mary Ukasick; his daughter Jayne; his granddaughters, Isabella and Alisha; his sisters, Harriet, Juanita and Irene; and his half-brother Gene.

He is survived by: his children, Joe Peterson (Terry), Sue Peterson, Betty Peterson, Mike Peterson (Vicki), John Peterson, Marge Goldade (Mike), Jenny Smith (Tom), Harry Peterson (Patricia), Al Peterson, Gene Peterson (Mary), Patty Sellner (Dan), Mary Engholm (Keith), Lisa Bringas (Arturo), Lori Peterson, Irene Branum (Mike), Theresa O'Reilly (Dan) and Knute Peterson (Melanie); and his brother Ken Peterson. He is also survived by 61 grandchildren, and 54 great-grandchildren.

He attended daily mass in his retirement until Covid-19.
